Coming into care

When is a child placed into care?
  • When possible, children and youth should be at home with their parents, with the family problems being solved by the family, or with help when needed from the community.
  • Sometimes the child or youth are not safe at home, because of:
    • abuse and neglect by their parents
    • serious alcohol and drug abuse problems
    • behaviour that places themselves or others at risk
    • mental health issues that are too severe for the family to deal with in the home
  • Different places to stay may include family members, friends or other safe places, including foster care.

What happens when a child is placed into care?

  • Usually, when a child or youth cannot live at home and comes into care, a court process starts.
  • A judge hears evidence from all sides and makes the final decision about where the child will stay.
  • A child's or youth's input is important. They will be asked for what they think would be best for them, and what they want to have happen.
  • While the child or youth is in care, they and the family try to solve the problems that made it unsafe for the child or youth to be at home.
  • Sometimes parents cannot make it safe and a child will not be able to go home for a long time or may never be able to live at home.
The goal is for things to get better so
the child and youth can go back to live at home.
